Many jazzy birthday presents

Here are a few birthday cards I did for a greeting card portfolio I have been working on.

Colorful Moths

I painted a pattern of colorful moths for a greeting card. The colorful moths I painted in gouache. The only moth I really used reference for was the big green one in the middle, this is a Luna moth. The other moths I just kind of made up. I used reference for their shapes but not for their colors and spots/designs. I doubt there is such a blue moth like the ones I made up. I hope my moths read as moths and not butterflies and that image isn’t thrown off by the colors. I chose to paint moths over butterflies because moths have those little feather-like antennas. So cute! The colorless line drawing was the finished sketch for the painting. I did this in microns. I didn’t realize at first how much I like this image. I think the pattern in just lines looks nice. It might work as a separate piece. Though I do like the colorful painting a bit more.

Star Gazing

Posted for Illustration Friday’s “Star Gazing”
A quick acrylic and gouache painting I did this morning. The colors of the animals I kept muted. To me the muted colors allows the animals appear to be in a dark setting, which they are. My star gazers are a lion, a raccoon, and a few stripy dogs.

In a creek

A quick painting of a couple in a creek. Outlining the shapes in my paintings for me is the most enjoyable part of painting. I get to use a liner brush - (these brushes last forever! I love them.) Also I do the outlines last so my painting comes together once their done. This painting was wonderful practice and I’m happy with how it turned out. For this one I like it being simple.

SCBWI Owl

My owl was published along side an article in SCBWI's Bulletin for July. Yay I love that my hoot is going to be seen by so many writers and artists.

Tiger

The original painting is 9x13 done in gouache and acrylic on watercolor paper.
I was asked by a friend to do a more whimsical painting with people. Several years ago while in school I painted mostly whimsical things. I remember once I painted a dragon with a picnic table tied to his back for picnickers. I feel my work grew away from being this whimsical over the last couple years; I would like to bring it back into my work. Just a little bit. While working on this painting I listened to the sound track to The Darjeeling Limited the Wes Anderson movie that takes place in India. Some inspiring music for a painting featuring an Indian tiger. I’m debating going back and re-painting the tigers eye. His eye is a little different from eyes I usually paint - (Just ovals…Hehe) but part of me likes the fact that it’s a little different.

A fox and a kite

The other day I did this painting in Gouache and acrylic. I was looking through some old sketches while cleaning my studio space. One sketch I put aside was of a fox flying a kite. After cleaning I decided to paint (mess up what I had just cleaned). This painting has similar colors and design of a smaller painting I did a few months back. The painting was of a bear and cat in a red wagon (It is on my web page as well as my ETSY site). It had the same grassy lines as well as the sandy color background. I like this design very much and I would like to start a series of illustrations much like this one.

cat roll

This is just a sketch I did in pencil then went over the lines with black gouache.
Have you ever seen a cat flop down and roll about? My cats do this all the time.
So I thought i would do a sketch of a happy cat rolling.
