Colorful Moths

I painted a pattern of colorful moths for a greeting card. The colorful moths I painted in gouache. The only moth I really used reference for was the big green one in the middle, this is a Luna moth. The other moths I just kind of made up. I used reference for their shapes but not for their colors and spots/designs. I doubt there is such a blue moth like the ones I made up. I hope my moths read as moths and not butterflies and that image isn’t thrown off by the colors. I chose to paint moths over butterflies because moths have those little feather-like antennas. So cute! The colorless line drawing was the finished sketch for the painting. I did this in microns. I didn’t realize at first how much I like this image. I think the pattern in just lines looks nice. It might work as a separate piece. Though I do like the colorful painting a bit more.

  1. This is really nice, bright and colorful! Love it, although I agree that the uncolored image has an interesting quality too.
